Intel has shown off the first six-core desktop processor in SanFrancisco at a Game Developers conference.

The 32nm Core i7-980X Extreme Edition, codenamed Gulftown, runs at 3.33GHz and is capable of processing 12 software threads simultaneously.

The chip giant also showed off the third version of its Graphics Performance Analyser (GPA), which helps developers analyse the ability of code to handle faster graphics and identify bottlenecks that could slow performance.

"With Intel GPA v3.0, developers can ensure that their titles run on the full spectrum of Intel Core processors (Core i3, Core i5 with HD Graphics, Core i7 and Core i7 Extreme Edition) and chipsets with a new platform-focused toolset," said the company.

"The platform view for task-based multi-core optimisations and a simplified automated game launch workflow help developers save valuable time. The updated toolkit now includes support for DirectX 10.1 and 64-bit game executables.

IT managers must not bow to pressure to let security issues lapse as the UK exits the recession. This was the opinion of top level chief information security officers (CISOs) at a roundtable event held this month in London’s BT Tower.

Microsoft has finally unveiled details of a free upgrade scheme for Office 2010.

The technology guarantee scheme will ensure that people who buy Office 2007 over the next few months will qualify for a free upgrade to the corresponding version of Office 2010.

Unlike in previous years, where Microsoft has run the scheme through retail partners, the company has decided to base this scheme on Office 2007 activations.

Anyone who buys Office 2007 - either as separate software or pre-installed on a new PC - will qualify for a free download of Office 2010, if they activate the software between 5 March and 30 September. Click here for further information.
