Simple Green IT Projects Save U.K. Government Millions
LONDON, United Kingdom - A British Cabinet Office Minister yesterday said that in the past year, a series of low-hanging fruit changes has helped the government save £7 million (US$11.5 million) in energy costs and cut its carbon footprint by 12,000 tonnes.
Angela Smith, speaking at the Greening Government ICT conference in London yesterday, said that some of the simple projects included setting printer defaults to double-sided printing, turning off PCs at night and extending the usable life of computers.

State of the art Storage
Over the past decade, it is fair to say that the pace of innovation in storage systems and associated software tools has outstripped the pace at which the majority of organisations have adopted them.
In all areas from storage management, storage virtualisation, server virtualisation, data de-duplication, compliance and e-discovery, to technical developments such as solid state storage and Fibre Channel over Ethernet, or storage as a service, business continuity or energy efficiency - a quick scan of market uptake does indeed suggest that vendors are some way ahead of their customers.
As an example, take a look at virtualisation and storage virtualisation in particular. While a majority of organisations have adopted virtualisation on some of their x86 server platforms, the numbers taking up storage virtualisation lags some way behind.

Green Tips for Data Storage
Today's data centre is going through a constant state of flux in an attempt to keep up with current demands. The data landscape grows exponentially, and with that growth comes the need to expand current storage and data centre infrastructures. This expansion is a fact businesses in every vertical have come to accept, but it comes with a price.
The Data Landscape
Four billion dollars is spent every year on data centre energy consumption and this number will only continue to climb. The type of data growth is also a contributing cost factor; mission critical data is growing in the enterprise environment. This means companies are buying more expensive energy hungry equipment to provide needed fast access and redundancy at both the server and storage level.

HP Innovation in Education: Technology to transform teaching and learning
Technology can create entirely new teaching and learning experiences. That is why HP, as a leading technology company, is in a strong position to support education at universities and schools. IT is not only a subject in its own right; it is also an essential tool for learning and teaching all other subjects.
But it takes more than just technology to raise test scores and inspire students. What really spurs progress is an understanding of how to use technology to improve the quality of education. Through its Innovation in Education programme, HP is an active partner in the creation of new models of teaching and learning.
"Innovation in education is vital to developing the next generation of high-tech innovators," explains Gabriele Zedlmayer, vice president of Corporate Marketing and Global Citizenship, HP Europe, the Middle East and Africa. HP is promoting some of the most innovative student projects at secondary schools and universities in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). The focus is on science, technology, engineering and mathematics - disciplines that are important to HP's business.
