Printing and the Environment: Managing Paper wastage

British office workers print out a paper mountain more than eight miles high every year, according to a survey. This added up to 120 billion pieces of paper with the average worker printing out 22 sheets every working day. Two in five workers (43 per cent) said they had picked up someone else's print-out by mistake and 8 per cent admitted to printing emails before they had read them.

The fact that there is a general lack of guidelines for employees around printing practices and most people readily admit to not really thinking twice about hitting the "print" option on an email or document. Printing and copying could amount to as much as five per cent of a company's total revenue, the majority of companies didn't have any idea how much their printing was costing them.

Talk to DTP today and see how we can help you manage your print environment with a DTP Managed Print & Copy Services solution, giving you the ability to put a cost on your print infrastructure as well as allowing you to manage who can print!! HP offers easier secure printing

HP has introduced an automated system to enable the secure printing of sensitive documents on corporate and government networks.

HP said HP Secure Print Advantage is the industry's first hardware-based security system to minimise business risk by addressing printer security vulnerabilities across the disparate systems, servers and clients typical in enterprise environments.

The system ensures that printing workflow management and single print jobs remain secure from the initial starting point at the desktop, to the server for verification, and back to the printer for completion, without disruption to the printer network.

"HP Secure Print Advantage automates traditionally manual processes and delivers an industry first: consistent, comprehensive and enforceable security policy for the print infrastructure," said Chris Whitener, chief strategist for Secure Advantage at HP.

"This solution provides the necessary automation and simplification of security tasks, like key management, to reduce the costs and burdens generally associated with them," he said.
Composed of servers, storage, software and services, the portfolio integrates security into the fabric of the IT environment.

  • More companies continue to increase the use of recycled paper in products, but improvements in paper recovery and investments in infrastructure are sorely needed.
  • There is a greater emphasis on reducing chlorine bleach and toxic emissions, but the paper industry as a whole has not embraced many best practices.

These facts are available from the Environmental Paper Network's recently released State of the Paper Industry report, which calls on firms to minimize paper consumption, maximize recycled content, source fibre responsibly, and employ cleaner production methods to reduce their effect on the climate crisis.
